Although the actiology of swimbladder inflation anomalies in important aquaculture species such as European sea bass D. labrax is not fully determined, culture conditions are commonly suggested as main contributory factors. Little information is available on whether swimbladder inflation has a genetic basis for its expression too. In this work, 24 full-sibling sea bass families from a 4 dams x 6 sires factorial crossing were reared under communal conditions. The larvae developing normal and abnormal (uninflated or hyper-inflated) swimbladders were genotyped at four microsatellite loci, Labrax-3, Labrax-13, Labrax-17, Labrax29, and allocated to the individual breeders. Out of 273 offspring, 97% could be assigned to a single parental pair. The genotype and... |

The purpose of this study was to determine whether diploid and triploid sea bass differed in terms of main haematological and physiological characteristics. Diploid and triploid fish were produced by sub-optimal pressure treatments and held in communal environments under standard rearing conditions. Total red blood cell count (RBCC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean cell volume (MCV), mean cellular haemoglobin content (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), plasma metabolites, osmotic pressure, gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity, electrolytes, cortisol, and 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T-3) were measured and compared. Triploidisation in sea bass led to an increase in erythrocyte size (32% in cytoplasm surface area, and 50% in... |

Sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (mean weight: 748 +/- 13 g), were maintained before and during vitellogenesis in 1, 3, 8, 16 and 32 m(3) tanks, and then they were transferred to 2 m(3) tanks, for the spawning season. During the first 2 months of the experiment, the growth rates were significantly lower in smaller tanks (1 m(3)). In August, the oocyte diameters were significantly lower in smaller tanks (1, 3 and 8 m(3)) than in larger (16-32 m(3)) tanks. At the end of the experiment, the fish mean weight in the 1 m(3) tanks was significantly lower than in the 3 m(3) tanks, but oocyte diameters and plasma oestradiol concentrations were not significantly different between the volumes. This shows a longer acclimation requirement in smaller volume rearing.... |

Reared sea bass were submitted to six stressful situations: hyperoxia with or without hypercapnia, increased stocking density in an open flow or recirculating system, transfer to another tank and nodavirus injection. The potentially negative impact of these factors on the lives of sea bass was investigated by measuring 9 water parameters and 19 fish parameters including total serum protein (TSP). TSP has already been used to evaluate stress. The present study investigates data of previous and new experiments, concentrating on the potential use of TSP as a routine indicator to assess welfare in sea bass reared on fish farms. In the current experiment, oxygen and carbon dioxide were seen to affect levels of TSP, but alterations were too erratic to enable... |

Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. It was very difficult to evaluate the light intensity (50-5000 lux) influence on feeding,... |

In two experiments, a computerized on-demand feeding system coupled with a PIT tag monitoring device was used to continuously record the triggering activity by ca. 50 individual sea bass for 55 days (Exp. 1, initial average body weight and coefficient of variation, CV: 299 g, 15%) and 69 days (Exp. 2, 157 g, 13%). Each group was stocked in 1 m(3) tanks and exposed to a water temperature of 21 +/- 1 degrees C and a light regime of 16:8 LD. Only 5% of the triggering activity was not associated with simultaneous PIT tag detection. Although each individual was detected via PIT tag during the experiment, only 67% and 74% of the fish actuated the trigger at least once in Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, respectively. Moreover, only two fish in Exp. 1 and one fish in Exp. 2... |

Using breeding programs to improve feed efficiency, the ratio between fish body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI), could increase aquaculture sustainability through reduced feed costs and environmental impact. To this end, individual phenotypic information is required. Individual FI can be measured by isolating each fish. Under these conditions, restricting the feeding rate has proved relevant to improve feed efficiency indirectly by selecting faster-growing animals. Moreover, a restricted feeding rate reduces the work load of collecting uneaten pellets after each meal. The approach assumes the most efficient fish at high and low feeding rates are the same, but this assumption remains untested. In European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), feed... |

The optimal conditions for the retention of the second polar body in sea bass eggs were investigated by altering the timing, intensity and duration of application of pressure and cold shocks. Treatment optima for cold shocks were 0-1 degrees C for 15-20 min at 5 min after fertilisation (a.f.) and 8500 psi for 2 min at 6 min a.f. for pressure shocks. Meiogenesis was obtained by fertilising eggs with UV-irradiated homologous sperm (32,000 erg mm(-2)) and pressure or cold shocking eggs as above. 100% triploidy was induced following definition of liable periods for the disruption of the meiotic spindle obtained in gynogenesis. Ploidy investigations were performed on experimental groups by flow-cytometry. Verification of uniparental transmission in meiogens was... |

The European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., tolerates a range of salinities from freshwater to hyper-saline. To study differences in protein expression, fish were reared in both freshwater and seawater. After 3-month acclimation, gill and intestine epithelia were collected and the soluble protein extracted. In all, 362 spots were differentially expressed in the gills and intestines of fishes reared in seawater compared to those from freshwater. Fifty differential protein spots were excised from a colloidal Coomassie-stained gel. Nine separate protein spots were identified unambiguously by mass spectrometry and database searching. Among the six proteins over-expressed in gill cells in seawater, five were cytoskeleton proteins and one was the aromatase... |
